A Thing Devoted chronicles two years in the life of a Christian family devastated by adultery and divorce.

Three, adopted, multi-racial children, struggle with the question of God’s seeming indifference to their pain. Ten year old Abster, a tiny spy in the house of loss and confusion, keeps a daily record of her observations.

“If you attend church weekly, and on time, are attentive in Sunday school, get full immersion baptism, tithe more than ten per cent, volunteer in the nursery, pray for missions, and really, truly believe in God, shouldn’t you be protected? Shouldn’t He keep terrible things from happening to you? I understand my obligations to Jesus, but what are His, to me?”

This intimate story of one family's journey through fire, considers the purpose of suffering, its defining nature, and ultimately its life giving power.

A Thing Devoted edition by Lotis Key Literature Fiction eBooks

The devastation of adultery and divorce from the perspective of a precocious child. We've heard the statistics that children of divorce have higher rates of depression, health issues and suicides etc. This book gives a glimpse into the how and why that is true. I was sorry when I got to the end of this book. I want to read more about how Absters discovers the world and records it in her notebook. Her creativity, resilience and enthusiasm put a cheerful light on subject matter that could have been daunting.
I was impressed with the picture of forgiveness as a divine gift that cannot be hurried or pretended into being. And when we are given the gift it really doesn't matter if we deserve it and want it or not. When the gift is given, the grace to receive it is also given.
As soon as I finished this book I wanted to read it again.

A Thing Devoted edition by Lotis Key Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Once you start reading A Thing Devoted, you won't want to stop. The writing is creative, honest, and real. The little details will draw you in. The author, Lotis Key, strikes a chord in the heart of the reader by acknowledging the cruel reality of betrayal, loss, devastation, and brokenness while at the same time giving the reader wings to soar above the sorrow and tragedy. The story is told from a very important perspective, that of a precious one who has experienced the painful results of sin. It is also important to note that A Thing Devoted does not neglect the beautiful side of reality. The author thoughtfully illustrates experiences of grace, love, tenderness, blessings, and renewed life. If you have experienced a stripping of joy and/or a death of what was or could have been, you will identify with this story. Regardless, you will learn so much from the courage of the characters in this book. It is a book I would recommend to all.
The novel talks of a subject that is very contemporary and quite common. The narration is truthful and describes very real emotions many readers can relate to, without being melodramatic. Often, they are described in a matter-of-fact manner which succeeds in allowing the reader to re-visit past personal scenarios with new perspective.

It's a story about life-changing events, about coping with everyday things after such events, and about new discoveries. Lotis Key is an author who writes comfortably from perspective of both a detached observer and an immersed participant of life. The reader will come away knowing or remembering that he/she may not have control over events in his/her life; but does have the choice on how to react to them.

Recommended reading for all ages but especially for parents, children, and young adults.
This is the story of a family finding its footing in the wake of adultery and divorce, charmingly recounted by a highly intelligent 10 year old coming face to face with some of life's most challenging questions while loving cats and wearing elfin hats. Why do bad things happen to good people-- to Bible believing church attending Christians who practice their faith? Why does God allow the faithful to undergo trials? Why doesn't He do a better job of shielding them from adversity? And is there such a thing as private sin, or do our individual actions impact the whole community?
When a feral cat kills the young girl's beloved cat Magi, she shouts " I hate Daddy and I hate Meany!" But as the story unfolds, she chooses to forgive, as one day she discovers Meany the murderous kitty half frozen under a bush, and saves his life.
The author uses lush detail and rich layers of meaning to create a poignant experience for the reader . It is an entertaining read with uplifting messages throughout. Highly recommend!!!
I rarely recommend something to friends, because I don't want people to judge my taste. However, I take the risk now. And this is because of the novel I read in one sitting.

I am one of those who were ministered to by Lotis Key's novel, "A Thing Devoted". I learned about the book from a friend when he recommended the author. I looked at the two books Lotis Key wrote but the synopsis of "A Thing Devoted" caught my interest. I bought a kindle version of it in the morning of December 31, 2012 and started reading the 2,845 pages novel which I finished before dark of the same day. I could not put down the book the moment I started it.

The story made me so angry, I felt the emotion of Nijah and the guilt of Ana. It made me cry and at some point, made me laugh. I also paused to think at the wisdom of Magi, the kitten. I now have a new hero, Abster!

I felt "bitin" (a Filipino word for a feeling of expecting for more but was suddenly cut short) in the ending. I want to know how Matthew and Luyi suffered hard the consequences of their wrong choices. This is because I was longing for justice for the kids and their mom - that's what I thought. But that desire exposed my heart. I realized that I was having a hard time forgiving those adulterous couple. I can simply ignore that unforgiveness in my heart and stick to my claim that I simply long for justice. But I could not deny the truth that I can't forgive Matt and Luyi for the pains they caused the innocent children and their mom. I want them to suffer more! That heart exposure led me to confess my unforgiveness and asked God to renew my heart. I prayed the prayer of Abster -)

This book answers the difficult question people had been asking, "where is God in the midst of crisis?" Ms. Lotis Key gave us the answer through a story everyone can relate to. I highly recommend this book!
This book is a heartwarming spiritual story about a troubled family's betrayal, abandonment and loss, and ultimate forgiveness and healing. It is in the journey through hard times that we come to understand God's faithfulness and love. This is an easy and uplifting story for someone looking to deepen their faith and spiritual understanding. The book is written from the voice of a ten year old girl whose wisdom is somewhat unbelievable, but the wisdom she imparts is worth the read.
